Last week, I promised myself I would only check TikTok for twenty minutes before I continued to study for my exam. An hour later, I found myself in a deep rabbit hole of endless videos about disasters, layoffs, and global crises. Sound familiar? Extra Credit: Russian River Brewing Company

Extra Credit: Russian River Brewing Company      From humble beginnings to becoming one of the biggest brewing companies in California, Vinnie and Natalie Cilurzo founded the Russian River Brewing Company and are celebrating their 20 years at the Santa Rosa Brewery. Vinnie Cilurzo was passionate about brewing beers at a young age and created his first company brewery in 1994, known as Blind Pig Brewing Company. As Vinnie was moving to Sonoma Country, Corbell Champagne sellers were opening a brewery and hired Vinnie to propel the brewery. Corbell helped Vinnie grow and develop his career in the brewery and hone in on a style of beer, India pale ale. Since then, Russian River Brewing Company has won many awards, allowing Vinnie and Natalie to take over and grow the company. With the help of their investors, they created a modern brewhouse to execute their dream of making good beer. Even with financial struggles and burned-down buildings, Vinnie and Natalie could navigate an...

Extra Credit: Ghostly Labor

Ghostly Labor      I watched "Ghostly Labor" by Vanessa Sanchez and La Mezcla on Thursday, September 19. I didn’t know what to expect, nor was I familiar with the history that would unfold before me. However, I was pleasantly surprised to explore the history of the U.S.-Mexico borders through an artistic lens. At the beginning of the show, the producers encouraged cheering and singing to immerse the audience in the experience. The performance featured various elements, including tap dancing, a percussion-based band, and visually striking backgrounds and lighting that enhanced the conveyed messages.       The program was divided into four parts: Pre-Colonization, Labor Relations, Domestic Migration, and the Fight and Coexistence. Out of all the acts, my favorite was Labor Relations because it was the most intense and emotional while focusing on Carmelita Torres and the Bath Riots. In 1917, the U.S. mandated that all Mexican workers crossing the ...

Book 1, Post 1

Book 1, Post 1 Book: American Like Me by America Ferrera      As a Korean American growing up in Guam, I’ve often felt like I did not belong in either Korea or America. In South Korea, I’m viewed as a foreigner because of my demeanor, attitude, and appearance which are seen as too “American.” Even my parents, who immigrated from South Korea, are now also considered outsiders and seen as too “American” ever since they moved to Guam.      When I moved to Los Angeles, I thought I would identify better with the Korean Americans on the mainland. However, I was surprised to see that I still feel like an outsider, often being labeled as an “international student” due to people’s lack of knowledge about Guam. Even though I grew up with the same media, trends, and education as those in the States, I constantly have to explain myself and where I’m from, and I feel like I will have to continue doing so for the rest of my life.      Hoping to con...

Job Description - Final Draft

Policy Analyst When I thought about what career fields to explore, I knew I wanted to pursue a path where I could impact and uplift others. My mentor introduced me to the Public Policy Institute of Guam at the Guam Legislature. Before this, I had no experience in government or politics. Even though I am a business administration major, I decided to give it a try. Little did I know that it would become one of my favorite internship experiences. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, a policy analyst raises public awareness of social issues. They conduct research and use their findings to propose solutions to these problems. This role carries high stakes, influencing decisions made by legislative leaders, government agencies, and the public. Regardless, the thrill of making a meaningful impact makes the job worthwhile. As a policy analyst, three key characteristics define this role: Independence Adaptability Communication Independence As a policy analyst, independence is esse...
